History of Percolation Testing

Henry Ryon, in 1926, developed a test to obtain field data on failing systems. He dug a hole one foot square to the depth of the failed system, filled it with water, allowed the water to seep away, then refilled the hole and recorded the time required for the water level to drop one inch. This became the process for determining the percolation rate.

The percolation test is based on the assumption that a soil’s ability to absorb sewage effluent over a prolonged period can be predicted from its initial ability to absorb clear water. From Ryon’s data comparing absorption rates of existing septic tank systems to the percolation test, the measured rate is reduced by a factor ranging from 20 to 2500 in order to size the absorption area. However, the test results are highly variable, and its use for system sizing depends on an empirical relationship between the measured percolation rate and the actual loading rate. Tests performed in the same soil can vary by as much as 50%, making the procedure unreliable and in need of a more accurate method.

To calibrate the test, Ryon inspected several failing or near-failing systems and recorded the system loading, soil characteristics, and the percolation rate measured in nearby soil. He plotted curves showing permissible loading rates versus percolation rates based on these data. It was later proposed that these curves could be used to size new soil absorption systems. The New York State Health Department adopted the procedure, which led to its widespread acceptance, though slight modifications have been made over the years.
